We Die Alone is one of the most gripping books I’ve ever read, capturing my attention from the very beginning. What is very interesting about this book is it is the true story of a mission that went wrong right from the beginning.
The book recounts the true story of Jan Baalsrud, a Norwegian national trained by the S.O.E. to return to Norway and disrupt Nazi operations there. He and 11 other operatives are ambushed by Nazi troops as they sail into harbor. Baalsrud is the only one to survive. He flees on foot — and I mean that literally; he loses his boots and has one of his toes shot off, so he has to escape up a hill over jagged rocks and through deep snow and ice while barefoot, all while being shot at by Nazi soldiers.
I won’t spoil anything else about the story, but I will warn you to make sure you have time freed up on your calendar, because once you begin reading this harrowing story, you will be incapable of putting the book down until you’re done.
